I had worked with Joann over 25 years ago when she was Director of Research at The Ontario Hospital Association.
As a colleague, I was impressed with her integrity, her honesty, her dedication and her directness. As in many workplaces, a few of us often met at coffee to "solve" the problems of the Association, Health Care and the world. Joanne was a leader in those conversations too. After I left the Association, I had lost connection with her and did not know of all that she has accomplished since.
In reading her biography, the memories of her friends, family and colleagues, I get a small sense of just what she has done and what she has been for so many. I can see that she has accomplished much and touched many. She leaves a large gap in many lives.
My thoughts are with you all.

Its so hard to believe that she is gone. Whoever wrote this beautiful representation of her entirely captured her essence.
I always looked up to Ciocia and have such good memories of her from childhood Christmas and times at Babcia Karguls...always the cool Ciocia that brought the best cool Toronto gifts and offered the best advice and so many smiles and laughs (so much heart)! She brought out the colours in life more fully.
My heart breaks as it has been some time since I last spoke to her, but despite the passing time, she had always impacted my life and I always admired her. She was very much loved.
I'm torn and sad that I cannot be there for the gathering tonight. I would love to hear how she impacted other peoples lives as well and the stories they have to share. But I will be there in spirit and will take some time to reflect tonight.
Her spirit shines on through all of these memories.

Thank you for your gift of unconditional friendship and for touching my life in so many wonderful ways. For close to 30 years. you showed me what it is to be a friend. I will always treasure your spirit, generosity, enthusiasm and a smile that shined so bright from inside your heart that it can never be forgotten.
You lived your life in ways that remind us to cherish every moment that life has to offer. From road trips to Niagara Falls; to chilly outdoor brunches in High Park; to hearing about what adventure you had planned next; to seeing you shine with pride when sharing stories of your nephews and niece and now the next generation of Trypucs; to the annual birthday dinners and shows in the city; to sending a card or swinging by for coffee to lend an ear and to offer support ....... you never wavered in your friendship and I hope you know just how much I loved you in return.
I know that over time the sadness in my heart will fill with memories of our friendship. And while I will miss hearing your voice singing Sto Lat each year, I will mark that time each year by counting the blessing that having you in my life has been.
My heart goes out to your family who you loved so fiercely and so dearly.

My interactions with Joann were limited as I've only met her a handful of times through her niece and nephews in social gatherings. However, what I remember her most for was her genuine interest and care in the people around her, so much so that when we came across each other she would remember details of previous conversations we had many months prior. Since hearing of her passing I've heard from many different people of how she'll be missed, and how she was a large part of their lives. I'm not surprised by this, as I think if she took that much genuine interest in our conversations, someone she hardly knew, I can only imagine the love, time spent, and involvement she had with her close friends and family.

So sad to think that we won't be seeing Joann's smile and friendly wave on Webb Avenue but so glad that we had the chance to connect in early January. We will remember her fondly and will think of her when we have the "kielbassa ring toss" that she jokingly suggested for a Polish themed street party this summer. Farewell to a dear neighbour.

Joann … a kind friend, a loving family member, a generous and insightful colleague, a great humourist. That is how I will remember her. Joann was a truly wonderful person and a special neighbour. She always made time for our boys and was never to busy to entertain them in her garden which contained an assortment of wonders and treasures in the eyes of a young boy. Each spring she welcomed their help as she set about planting her flowers and vegetables into the assortment of planters that adorned her back deck and garden, providing them with garden gloves, trowels and unimpeded access to bags of dirt. She showed them how to gently pinch the grey green leaves from the mounds of lavender plants that spilled over her front retaining wall onto the sidewalk so that they could enjoy their fragrant sweet scents. She provided them with little containers so that they could pick raspberries from the backyard bush and then encouraged them to eat them all as she told them that she simply had too many for any one person to enjoy alone. She routinely enlisted their help (much to their delight) to clean the bird bath by handing them her garden hose and a scrub brush as she always ensured it was kept clean and filled with fresh water for whatever creature might wander through her yard. Joann was a joy to be around and we all feel so privileged to have had the opportunity to have known her and been touched by her kind and generous spirit.

I first met Joann in 2007 at the Toronto Central LHIN where she had the difficult task of writing the Toronto Central LHINs first strategic plan -- which she accomplished effortlessly. Her enthusiasm, unstoppable energy, and positive "can-do" approach was not only critical in the early days of the LHINs, but was contagious and carried many of the less experienced staff, including me, through a period of great uncertainty. Since then I've run into Joann many times over the years in our neighborhood, at Loblaws, or on the subway, and her upbeat energy was always the first thing I noticed - such a force! I will miss knowing that I might run into her at any moment. Her passing is a great loss, she was adored by many.

My thoughts are with each and every one of Joann’s treasured collection of friends and family- human and animal. To lose such a person as Joann is more than tragic for us all. I loved that many of the words that were used in her obit were the words that come when free associating about her- supportive, kind, compassionate, larger than life, sparkling, happy, fun, hardworking and devoted. You captured her so very well.
If I could create the ideal person to befriend it would be Joann. She made every encounter joyous. Regardless of the load in her life, she stayed in touch and on top of your troubles. She always took the time to be supportive and boost your spirits. She was a blast to be around. She made every encounter in her day positive and matter.
In December 2017, at one of our regular breakfasts, we watched a woman order cake at 8 in the morning. We vowed that at Christmas in 2018, we too would skip the eggs and have a decadent piece of cake. And that is exactly what we did. For the rest of my life, I will have a piece of cake for breakfast at Christmas time and conjur up all of the joy that she has brought to my life.

It was wonderful to have Joann as our "other side of the wall" neighbor for all her years in Bloor West. Her kindness, her love for family, and her special fondness for children and animals always shone through. After our cat passed away at the age of 19, she gave us little Ginger, the mother of her own huge cat, Smyk. When Joann later took in three rescued feral cats, whom she could never pet, she would come next door to coddle Ginger instead, in order to get some precious feline gratitude.
We'd tend each other's cats when someone was away. We'd never bother to keep our gardens separate -- our tomatoes would hang over the fence on her side, while her raspberry canes hung over onto our side. It really felt as if Joann (and her Mom) were part of our family. Every Hallowe'en, I'd sit with her on our front steps, chatting as she dispensed home-made fudge to the adult neighbors who came by.
In the 37 years we've lived on this street, the neighborhood has lost a number of fine people -- but we've never seen (or felt) such dismay at the loss as we did when news of Joann's passing spread. She made a wonderful impact on everyone who was blessed to know her, and she already is missed sorely.

I have been reading some of the many emails of support Joann has sent me over the years...last July she sent me some great advice to help me through one of life's transitions... I am sharing some our email exchange here because I think it might give us all some strength in the days and months ahead.... In her words:
I'm so sorry, Bev, that you're going through a low time. It does sound like a lot of change and I know how overwhelming that can be. I can remember days and weeks of just sitting and doing "nothing" and beating myself up afterward that I had wasted time. In hindsight, I was doing something really valuable - taking care of myself, being quiet, slowly regaining strength and perspective, And you will do the same with time. I love Leonard Cohen's observation, "there's a crack in everything. That's how the light gets in." And it will get in and get stronger and stronger.
Take good care of yourself and don't hesitate to tell me what I can do to help you. (I now have two old wooden rocking chairs on my front porch ... maybe someday soon we can rock and cry and laugh... ) xo
And I'm so glad I took her up on her offer....we had a great evening of conversation, Vesuvio's pizza! and sangria rocking our worries away! So much fun....!!!

I will always remember Joann for her zest and joy for life, her big wave hello from across the street, the time she took to show interest in my daughter, our interesting chats on my front porch, and her unrelenting thoroughness regarding snow-shovelling. She was the shovelling queen, single-handedly removing every inch of snow from the long driveway she shard with her elderly next-door neighbour, snowfall after snowfall, without a word of complaint -- and this act of kindness was in many ways symbolic of her generosity, strength, and zest for life. Joann was the kind of person who made others feel understood and appreciated, like we were on the same page, as she was always full of empathy and compassion. I miss her very much already. Our street will not be the same without her.

Our very sincerest sympathies to the family of the fabulous Joann Trypuc from her friends and colleagues (and huge fans) at AMS. Joann has played an enormous role in the work of our organization since her initial involvement in the creation of the Phoenix Project in 2011. Her immense talents helped establish our compassionate care work and continued to impact its recent transition to “Compassionate Care in A Technological World”. Her incredible intelligence, amazing insight and sparkling personality enhanced many a Board meeting, brainstorming session, corporate event and conference and the organization will be the poorer for her absence. There is some comfort in knowing that her immeasurable contributions will continue to influence the healthcare of Canadians for years to come. She will be very sadly missed.

I was saddened to read of Joann's death. I was privileged to work with her in the early days of the Ontario Stroke System development when she worked as a facilitator and consultant to the pilot sites and the Heart and Stroke Foundation. Your words about Joann are wonderful and so very true - generous in energy and spirit, wide smile, warm embrace and wry humour, positive energy., a joy to be around. There is one more part of her life that I would like to honour. Joann made an enormous contribution to stroke care in Ontario. She use her skills as a facilitator and report writer at many steps along the way. She was the true writer of some key articles that helped give the work attention. She was a strong member of the Board of the Ontario Stroke Network. always present, enthusiastic and intelligent in all her many contributions.

I am so very saddened to hear of Joann's passing. I knew her for only a few years through the OSN Board and even with that brief time in knowing her, it was clear that she was such a beautiful person. My sincere condolences to her family and friends at this very difficult time.

I have known Joann for too short of time. We connected immediately at Qigong class. Loved her smile with sparkling eyes. Her joy for life was contagious! She will be missed dearly.

Joann was one of the finest people I’ve ever had the privilege to know. She embodied love of life and love of people. Her dedication to her beloved mum was inspiring. One only had to spend time with Joann to know of her love of her family and dear friends. And of course the cats!
We’re all shellshocked to think of a future without Joann physically with us - but our warm memories and her spirit will keep her close.
