Irene and I met when we were both students at McGill University. We became friends right away as she had a generosity of spirit and sense of humor that was so welcoming. Irene was a member of MENSA and her lesson plan ideas reflected her amazingly creative mind. My life was and still is enhanced having known her. As well, her parents were lovely, warm hearted and friendly people too and I visited their home in Montreal, where her Mother worked as a pharmacist, many times throughout our years in university. Yes I remember Irene giving me a beautiful wicker chair and circular end table for my sparely furnished student digs. We even rented a car one weekend and drove to Stowe, VA with her young son. The brutal, senseless death of her brother Val in Sidney, Australia was a life altering tragedy for Irene as she constantly spoke of moving there after graduation to enjoy the beach life and be near her only sibling. When I met Val and his girlfriend I could see the strong family bond and how she looked up to him. Plus he was very tall! During the Quebec referendum in 1980 she and her family took off for a visit to the USA until it was over as they had experienced a communist takeover in Latvia in WW11 and so had witnessed first hand political chaos and knew that reality. Years later our paths crossed again at a Visual Arts Subject Council meeting where we were both teaching in Ontario. That was a wonderful surprise! Rest in peace Irene you were one of the most creative and talented High School Art Teachers ever and your students were fortunate indeed. In reflection I am eternally grateful that we were friends. Go in peace with the Angels.

Hi Jamie,Your mother was a childhood friend. I knew your grandparents, Milda and Val and your uncle Valentine. My husband Richard and I lived on Harvard in Montreal and so did your family. I remember when your Mom came back from Bermuda with you as a baby. She loved you so much. You also might remember my father, George Beikmanis whom you visited in Fenelon Falls and spent some time there in the summer. You were about 5 years old when my family and I moved to Calgary but we stayed with you for about a week.My son Adam remembers you too.He was a bit older than you.
I am sorry you lost your Mom.It is a difficult time when a parent passes away.I know she will always be with you in spirit.

Jamie, I would like to express to you my deepest sympathy at the passing of your beloved mother. I wish you strength and peace at this difficult time. We have not met but I am your mother's first cousin (and Rita's). Your grandmother and my father were sister and brother. Our families would get together often, and celebrate holidays. We had a good time together, especially in the summer, swimming and playing baseball. I am so sorry for your loss. Ilse Zandstra
