Obituary of Kitty Kamboj
Kitty Remediana Kamboj—affectionately known as Nani—was born on May 10, 1942, in Goa to Constance and Georgina Fernandes. She was raised in a loving family alongside her brothers and sisters, where happiness filled their home even when times were hard and meals were sometimes hard to come by. Her devout Catholic faith, nurtured by the support of the St. Vincent De Paul society, became a cornerstone of her life and helped her family not just survive, but truly thrive through life’s challenges. This faith remained a guiding light for Kitty, and she passed its gentle strength on to her children and grandchildren.
On January 11, 1970, Kitty married Sudershan Kamboj. Together, they welcomed two children: Laveena (married to Wayne Chong Ling) and Arvin Kamboj (married to Rebecca Pinto). Yet, the true joy of Kitty’s life was found in her grandchildren—Riya, Aleena, Alyssa, and Deven. As a grandmother, she was patience, kindness, and generosity personified. She cherished every outing to the cinema to watch the latest Disney movie, followed by dinner and all the sweet treats her grandchildren could dream of. She adored each of them deeply, always looking forward to their next adventure together. True to her role as “Nani,” she kept chocolates and candies tucked away in her purse, ready to share—especially during Sunday mass.
Nani listened to her grandchildren’s stories with endless patience and delight, her laughter and warmth lighting up the room. Anyone who met Kitty was immediately drawn in by her radiant smile, which made everyone feel welcome and loved. Her passion was cooking—sharing authentic Indian dishes with family, friends, and even strangers who longed for a taste of her famous chicken biryani. Birthdays, Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s gatherings were always brimming with food and love, and Kitty made sure no one ever left hungry. For her, food was love, and she poured her heart into every meal.
Kitty—our beloved Nani—was a kind mother, grandmother, and friend who touched countless lives with her generosity and steadfast faith. Her sudden passing on Saturday, June 14th, left us heartbroken, with so much left unsaid and undone. We yearn for more time to tell her how much she meant to us and to learn even more about the remarkable woman she was.
In her absence, we discovered a new side of Nani: she was a poet. Among her handwritten verses, we found a poem titled “For You,” a message for all who loved her and whom she loved in return:
“One day, I may leave this world without being able to say goodbye, so for now I want to say thank you. Thank you for your love, Thank you for being in my life, and Thank you for giving me a life worth living. I love you to the end and beyond.”
Thank you, Nani. Just THANK YOU. You will be deeply missed, but your love, your faith, and your kindness will live on in all of us.
