Obituary of Sylvia Maria Gumpesberger

Sylvia Maria Gumpesberger, born July 29, 1962, passed away peacefully on July 2, 2025, surrounded by her family and friends. She is survived by her sister Linda Benishai, nephews Ariel and Max, niece Noa, and grandnephew and grandniece Isaiah and Libby.

Sylvia was a curious and ardent learner, resulting in a diverse skill set and wide range of hobbies. She had a passion for transforming wasted public space into urban vegetation, planting vegetable and flower gardens wherever she could and breathing life into forgotten corners of her community. She saved the seeds of any plant she found interesting, made apple cider vinegar from her own apple tree, and could forage an incredible flower arrangement in any season. She was also a professor of Gemology at George Brown College, a first officer of Mariposa Cruiseline, a workshop presenter at the Royal Ontario Museum, and a ramp attendant at Porter Airlines. She had a knack for languages, becoming fluent in German during her travels to an army base in Garmish, and even spoke some Hebrew, inspired by her good friend and brother-in-law, Dany.

Sylvia will be remembered for her boundless creativity, passion for agriculture, uncanny knack for finding delightfully quirky gifts, and the deep affection she held for her community, including the neighbourhood cats.

A loving and devoted aunt, sister, and member of her beloved Little Trinity Church community, Sylvia will be deeply missed.

A service in Sylvia's honour will be held on Tuesday, July 15th at 7pm at Little Trinity Anglican Church located at 425 King St E, Toronto, ON M5A 1L3.  A livestream link will be available by clicking HERE. Virtual guests are reminded to have their volume set to high and that no technical assistance will be made available.
