Obituary of Benjamin Chan

Benjamin Hyunjin Jihon Chan (Ben) was born at Toronto’s Mount Sinai Hospital on January 4, 2005.  Ben was born with a chromosomal mutation and related congenital medical complications that kept him in the NICU at the Hospital for Sick Children for his first weeks.

Despite the struggles with his health, Ben grew up to be a playful, sweet, and joyful boy. Ben loved so many things in life, but some of his favourites were listening to music, family gatherings, car rides, birthday celebrations (especially candle-lighting and singing), warm showers, listening to uncle Duck’s guitar, trying different foods, trips to shopping centres and scenic walking trails, and of course, the beige comfort toy he held just about everywhere he went.

Ben passed away on July 18, 2025 at 4:03pm at Cortellucci Vaughan Hospital’s Critical Care Unit following a week-long admission for complex pneumonia. His departure was painless and peaceful, and Ben had his loving mother, father, and sister by his side. Benjamin is deeply missed by Harmi and Harbi (grandma and grandpa), uncles Duck and Dan, aunts Cheryl and Hei-Jung, cousins Matthew, Emily, Noah, and Jonah, sister Hannah, and parents Soo and Nelson.

Ben’s family is grateful for the support of friends, neighbours, and extended family in this difficult time, for caregivers, doctors, and nurses who cared for and loved him with compassion throughout his life as well as in his final moments. Today and onward, let’s remember Ben as the smiley, handsome, giggly, silly, and gentle boy we all know.

Please join us to remember and honour Benjamin with visiting on Wednesday, July, 23, 2025 from 6-9 p.m. at the eco Life Celebration Centre-Magnolia Chapel of St. John's Dixie Cemetery (737 Dundas Street East, at Cawthra, Mississauga). Guest parking is available in the large lot adjacent to the church. Please proceed through the cemetery gates to the building ahead, west entry. Guests with mobility challenges may be dropped off under the carport and we would be happy to return your car to the parking lot.

Benjamin will be laid to rest privately at St. John's Norway Cemetery (256 Kingston Road at Woodbine, Toronto) and there will be no formal Funeral Service.

We encourage everyone to share a memory, story or sentiment of Benjamin's life here at his memorial legacy page. In lieu of flowers, please consider a donation in Ben’s memory to the Hospital for Sick Children, the hospital that helped Ben the most to live his inspiring and odds-defying life. Such donations may be made by using the Donations tab on his homepage.
