Obituary of Leopoldina Cabral
September 24, 1940 – July 19, 2025
It is with great sadness and heavy hearts that we announce the passing of our mother, mother-in-law, grandmother and sister Leopoldina Merciana Cabral, also lovingly known as Mama Dina, Leopoldin, and Dina, who passed away peacefully at home on Saturday, July 19, 2025.
She was an amazing wife to the late John Bosco Cabral, loving mother to Maria (Abdul), Melwyn (Gean), the late Deborah and doting grandmother to Farrah, Crystal, Hannah and Johnell.
Born in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania to the late Daigo Rosario and Maria Agusta Fernandes, Dina was the 4th of 7 siblings: sister to the (late) Patrick and Mary Fernandes, Apolly and Ida Fernandes (USA), (late) Anthony and Mary Fernandes (Goa), (late) Menino Fernandes, Concy and (late) Naci Fernandes (UK), Vincent and Mabel Fernandes (France) and her many nieces and nephews.
Educated at St. Joseph’s Convent School, Leopoldina went on to work as a stenographer and secretary at Ridoch Motors, where her professionalism and diligence were widely respected. She then moved to Wazo Hill where she continued to work in administration and sewed masks for the factory staff.
A woman of many talents and passions, she loved running, singing, baking, needlework, embroidery, sewing and was especially gifted at cooking. She had a flair for house decorating and rearranging furniture to make our home warm and welcoming.
Charming and deeply family-oriented, Leopoldina was known for her generosity, strong Roman Catholic faith, and unwavering belief in seeing the best in others. She found joy in hosting, and her home was always open to others.
She was a strict but loving mother, who held education and discipline in the highest regard. She raised her children with a strong foundation of faith, good values, and resilience, and passed down lessons of charity, independence, and unshakable perseverance.
Although we will miss her dearly, we know she will be watching over us. Rest in peace Mum (Mama Dina).
Leopoldina's Funeral Mass was celebrated on Friday, July 25, 2025 at 11 a.m. at St. Christopher's Parish (1171 Clarkson Road North, Mississuga) followed by the Rite of Committal at Meadowvale Cemetery (7732 Mavis Road, north of highway 407).
