Phyllis Strachan

Obituary of Phyllis Strachan

Phyllis Hasty Marchant Walsh was born on March 7, 1928, with her twin brother Bruce. She grew up in Montreal, and spent summers in Maine. From synchronized swimming in high school, to a lifetime love of yoga and long walks, Phyllis remained active throughout her life.

After graduation, Phyllis began her 43 year career with Bell Canada, and in April 1951, she married Gordon Kenneth Strachan, who was serving in the Canadian Military.  The couple moved between Ottawa, Kingston and Montreal, before settling in Toronto in 1962. The sixties saw the adoption of their son, Glenn, and daughter, Susan.

After the passing of her father, she took in her aged mother, whom she supported, along with her husband (who had become ill) until their passings in 1985.

Retiring at age 60, she moved to the "Beach", and filled her days with good friends, exercise classes, and lunching on Queen St. When not out with friends, she could be found walking her beloved dog on the Boardwalk, or soaking up the sun on her porch, coffee and book in hand, and dog beside her.

She cherished time with family and was a proud granny to Shaeleigh, Shannon and Shawna, and was thrilled to become a great grandmother to Aubrey, Carter and Henry.

At 93 years old, and needing a bit more assistance, she moved to Altamont Care home, where she was known and loved for her feisty personality, and continuous coffee consumption. This past March, Phyllis celebrated her 95th birthday with her family. On Saturday June 24th, Phyllis passed peacefully, surrounded by her memories and loved ones.

As per Phyllis's request, her immediate family will be holding a private memorial in Montreal where she will be interred. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that you share your stories here, and enjoy a cup of coffee in her memory.

Please share your memories, photos and sentiments of her life here at her memorial web page.
