Obituary of Alcina Neiva Lopes Metzger
Alcina Neiva Lopes Metzger
November 16, 1935 - July 23, 2017
Alcina was born on November 16, 1935 in Mozambique, Africa. She married John Guerreiro in 1956 and had three children: Manuela, Joseph, and John. Their brief marriage was followed by divorce and subsequently, John’s immigration to Canada in 1969. Their children stayed with her in Mozambique until 1975 when they rejoined their father in Canada.
Thereafter, Alcina relocated to Portugal where she lived with a few relatives until 1983, when she also reunited with her family in Toronto. Although Alcina and John never remarried, they always remained friends.
The first few years in Canada were rather difficult as she struggled to learn English. It wasn’t too long before she would find employment at Toronto General Hospital as a custodian. Soon after, she moved into her own apartment, acquired her driver’s license, and gained the independence she desired.
After meeting John Metzger a few years later, she remarried for the second time in her life and became Mrs. Alcina Metzger. Sadly, John Metzger passed away in 1998 and Alcina continued to live on her own until 2007 when physical and mental impairment forced her to reside in a long term care facility at Villa Colombo Vaughan where she remained until her passing on July 23rd, 2017.
To her friends, Alcina was an endless source of friendship and support, and to her children, she was the pillar of strength that instilled in them the values of honesty and hard work.
We love you so much and wish that we had more time together. We will cherish all of the great memories we had and will carry your values with us. You will be missed by all and your memory will live in us all forever.
Your sons and daughter: Manuela, Joseph, John; and grandchildren: Edward, Fernando, Gabriel, Alexander, Stephanie, Ariana, and Briana
