To hear of this news saddens me greatly.
Peter was my supervisor for my masters and undergraduate project. I greatly enjoyed working under his supervision. His enthusiasm for science was contagious, and inspiring. We would always speak about his running, travels, cycling, and his music too. The skills I gained under your supervision continue to serve me well to this day as a practicing physician. I will always remember you fondly.
Thank you for everything Dr. O'Brien.
Owen Lee
Former graduate student.

So hard to say goodbye to someone who was such an important part of our lives. Peter was one of the most gentle, kindhearted, loving men you could ever meet. He had such a huge impact on all of us and we will treasure every moment we spent with him from the very early days right up to the last. With so many wonderful Peter stories (and I’m sure anyone who ever spent time with Peter has a story) he will live in our hearts and memories forever.

One of my earliest memories of Peter goes back to when I was a young teen and we were all together at Aunt Lyma's and Uncle Cyril's. The first time I heard that amazing laugh it filled the room and touched everyone around him. Peter always welcomed us into his home as most often we arrived in packs. Peter would say, "the Newfie's are here." No matter how much chaos went on, he would find a path through the crowd and go about his business. Peter devoted his life to his family, his work and competing with himself to beat his own time to and from work on his bike as fitness played a major part in his life. Forever in our Hearts!!

I am a Chinese exchange Ph.D. student of Dr. O’Brien and I come back to China after my graduation. Under his supervision, I know the meanings of science. I can say he save my research life and he is a very good mentor. Also I learn how to be a kind and warm-hearted professor. In my brain, he is always healthy as he ride bicycle every day even at his 70 ages. When I see the picture of his last days, I cannot believe he become so weakness and my heart is cry. I never believe he will leave us so quickly. I will always remember his eye and he always take out a pen to draw, to write. Never forget he like to eat donut and listen the music with his earphone when he is reading papers.
I will miss you and remember you forever.

I am really saddened to hear the news that Peter had passed away.
I was his last PhD student. We are the only two in the lab during the last 8 months of my PhD studies and before the closure of his Lab at the University of Toronto.
Peter was a great mentor and a friend. Even with his condition, he sometimes wanted to walk back home.
He never gave up and that taught me a valuable life lesson.
I am also indebted to Cindy who helped me a lot.
May God rest him in piece.

The first time I met Peter was quite so much detached from my norm, I was astounded! Here was this university professor that I absolutely was humbled by. Little did I know he was to be my future brother in law! To say I was impressed by his intelligence would be a huge understatement! I remember picking up a paper he was working on, thinking, "Wow! Am I out of my league, marrying into this family!" Couldn't have been farther from the truth!
Peter made me part of the world I loved, unconditionally. I will miss you, my brother, every day. Forever in my heart.

Farewell to someone I could never forget. When I first met Peter, applying for my undergraduate project course, he seemed to be the stereotypical professor with his drooping glasses and penchant to be lost in thought. Over the next 5-6 years that he supervised my graduate work, I realized he was so much more. A gifted mentor, a prolific writer and well-respected by his peers. However, it is the small things that I recall most fondly. How he'd seem to always have a cup of chili from the food truck for lunch, how he still came into work during a snow storm on his bicycle, the bright blue imac on his desk, that distinctive laugh and who could forget his fitness level. One of my most memorable recollections was when I was discussing some research results in his office. He had found several "key" publications online. With no time to spare, he donned his coat, grabbed his bag and bolted for the library. I tried to follow him but was winded before I got past St. George (he was zooming across King's College by then). Probably 40 or more years his junior, his endurance put me to shame. Fitness aside, this also exemplified his passion for science. Some of the most defining years of my life happened under Peter's supervision. He instilled in me an enthusiasm for research, helped get my career started and supervised my future significant other.

I was so saddened to hear that Peter had passed away. I knew him as a fellow professor at the Leslie Dan Faculty of Pharmacy. He was well-known for his infectious laugh and his great camaraderie to all his colleagues. He took on the responsibility of biosafety officer for the Faculty for so many years, that he was very well-known also by others at the University. He was well respected by his graduate students, and through his mentorship, they became some of the most well-published and successful students in our Faculty. I remember him personally from when he participated in interviewing me for a position at the Faculty. He was very encouraging. Peter was also a leading expert in drug toxicology who had a wealth of knowledge in this field. We will miss him dearly.

The Brother I Never Had
My memories of Peter go back to Cindy`s arrival at the house with this man with a very infectious laugh. I heard this laugh mny times through the
years.
I enjoyed my visits to Portugal Cove, Nfld., where Peter and Cindy had a farm. I also got to see Peter welcoming the arrival of Bill and Sara.
He was a loving dad, with a calming effect on his children when they were upset.
He continued to have a small garden in Toronto, where his neighbors commented on his wonderful flowers. I remember teasing him about his tomatoes,
saying they must be Chernobyl tomatoes to grow that well!
I am thankful for the visits to Fort Nelson where we enjoyed our family, together. I will greatly miss Peter and never forget the good times.
Rest in peace, my brother
