Laura Davison posted a condolence

We have just come upon this site and the sad news of Dr. Spencer's passing last November, and wanted to send these belated condolences.
I and all my family were so fortunate to have Dr. Spencer as our family doctor for many years, beginning in those early days in Don Mills. Indeed, one of my earliest memories is queuing for a flu shot when I was a very little girl. When we got to the front of the queue, we realized my brother was not there. He had slipped out, having decided he'd prefer not to have one. My parents rushed out to find him, where he was seen sprinting east along Lawrence Avenue with the Spencer's dogs in happy pursuit!
I can still hear Mrs. Spencer's friendly announcement when my mother and I arrived each week for our allergy shots: "it's Mrs. Davison and Laura!". We are grateful for house calls, safe delivery of 2 children (including me) and the confidence and comfort that came from knowing we were under the care of such an intelligent, kind and talented doctor.
And I know that my father, who had also emigrated from England after the War, always enjoyed his conversations with a fellow Brit. The list of interests on this site help me understand just how much they had in common - even Coronation Street (my dad's guilty secret!).
We hope you will all take comfort and pride in a long life so well lived.
On behalf of all the Davisons,
Laura

Heartfelt condolences to the whole Spencer family. My mother, Winifred Rutledge, worked for a short time for Bob and I babysat the boys when they were quite young. He also delivered my sister, Jayne. Our family has always held Bob in high esteem. Our thoughts are with you.

Dear Joan and family,
I am so sorry for your loss.
As you know, my family started going to Dr. Spencer when I was about 8, and I only stopped a short while before he retired. With Mum working as his nurse for nearly 20 years, he and you, Joan, are woven into my memories. He always had time to talk, and laugh. And he was a wonderful diagnostician. And those amazing standard poodles!
I was surprised that I didn't find any early photographs to share, but I've just uploaded some nice ones from Mum's 90th birthday celebration. Everybody there certainly enjoyed his sense of humour in the memories he shared of Mum, and her time in his office.
She has always felt she was very lucky to get the position with him. I know we all were.

Dear Joan,
I was so sorry to hear the news of Bob's death. He was a wonderful doctor and a wonderful man. Coming to work for him
back in the early 1960s was a real pleasure. I really enjoyed working with him over the next -- what was it? almost two decades? He was comfortable and easy to get on with, and always treated his patients well. In fact, he was one of the best doctors I ever met. My sincere condolences to you and the family.

I offer my condolences to Joan and other family members and regret that I will be out of the country and unable to attend the celebration of Dr. Spencer's life in person. I was a patient of his from the late 1980s, when the medical director of the insurance company I was working for at the time recommended him to me, until he retired in 2014. Although I left that company not long after, and his office was no longer near either my office or my home, I never considered looking for another doctor. Visits with Dr. Spencer were well worth the extra travel time. He always took the time to get the bigger picture of how things were going, treating me as a person, not just dealing with the illnesses or injuries. I greatly appreciated his thorough, caring, and collaborative approach. And Joan and his office assistants were always helpful in arranging appointments and creating a welcoming office environment. He has been and will be missed, even by those like me who did not know him socially.
