Romeo was the most fascinating and principled man I have ever met. Throughout a 31 year prison term he refused his freedom because he maintained that “parole is for the guilty, not for the innocent”. How many of us would have the moral strength to do that? ‘Guilt’ and ‘innocence’ weren’t just legal concepts for Romeo, he said they were part of “human nature - and you either have it or you don’t”. Today we can remember a man who truly understood what it was to be human, and to suffer as one.
