Wow! I've just found out that Jack passed away. I would like to pass my sincere belated condolences to Lorraine and their children.
I will always be grateful for knowing Jack. He was a very creative and diligent artist...and a classy guy in his own unique way. I remember quite fondly designing the annual studio invitations with Jack. They were all handwritten in calligraphy by me. If it wasn't for Jack's keen artistic direction the finished product would have most certainly not have been as unique as it always was year after year...as was always the many studio works on sale.
I have only one piece of work from the school house studio which is a large cat made by Lorraine. It is not Jacks work but in a way for me it is because you could never talk about Jack without including the name of his chief collaborator Lorraine and of course vice versa.
Many years ago After being inspired by Jack and his very creative wife I decided to live in a Latin country and have been here since 2008.
I can honestly say I am a better person for knowing Jack Herman. His legacy will be his work which will continue to enrich the lives of the many who are fortunate enough own one of his very special, hand made pieces.

My deepest condolences. I am sorry to say I never met Jack. But I bought a lot of his work in the 1970's. I remember the first pieces I bought were his seconds he used to sell at a craft show in a small church basement in Caledon every November.. I have quite a collection of his work which just recently was passed down to my daughter who has always loved it and will treasure it forever.. His work was beautiful and unique.He will be missed.But, his stunning work will live on.Sincerely Barbara Shugan

Memories of Jack
I was looking through a Caledon East Arts & Crafts recipe book from 1972, prepared for the 15th anniversary of the show and found a Jack Herman recipe for Greek Shrimp Stew. It reminded me that the first time I met Jack was in the late 50s at his Toronto restaurant, I was 10. Jack was explaining to my mother, Daphne, the proper way to cook spaghetti. For decades, Jack and Lorraine graced my mother’s gift shop with their pottery.
They were frequent visitors to my parents’ country property. In the winter, Jack liked to join the boys for a game of pond hockey. He was not a large man and we would occasionally check him into a snow bank. He took this in his stride and always treated us with kindness and respect. This attitude and his interest in his friends was still there the last time that I spoke with him at my mother’s memorial in 2012.
Each day I am reminded of Jack and Lorraine; Herman tiles hang in our master bedroom and Herman coffee mugs are used on a daily basis.
