Obituary of Peter Harvey Hawke
Peter Harvey Hawke died peacefully at his home in Etobicoke on Wednesday October 2 2019 at the age of 86 after many decades of defying medical odds. Beloved husband of Eunice Hawke for nearly 59 years and father of Janice Hawke and her partner Brad Thompson and his daughter Mya Thompson of Toronto and Julie Hawke of Birmingham, UK. Survived by brother Ronald and his wife Pat and his sister-in-law, June. Predeceased by siblings Alexander (Alec), Shirley, her husband Horst and Robert (Bob).
Peter sustained a significant brain injury in his early 30s from complications from ulcerative colitis. He underwent repeated surgeries and a lengthy rehabilitation, and beyond all expectation, returned to work just over a year later. He worked full time into his mid-50s, raising two children during that time while living with complex disability. He survived in part due to the innovative thinking of staff at the Toronto General Hospital in the early 1960s, but mostly due to stubbornness and the devoted care and support of his wife, Eunice. Pete was indeed a medical miracle and to his friends and family, a superhero.
Peter was employed by Ontario Hydro for 35 years and was involved in the building of the St Lawrence Seaway. He is fondly remembered for his sense of humour, love of baseball, reading, sugary treats and music. Most likely, Pete is now enjoying chatting with his buddies, Mel Torme, Ella Fitzgerald and Jackie Robinson. :)
