Many memories of lots of laughs and his big smile. I looked forward to hearing his views on just about anything. You knew you would learn something new and it was always a test of your own social conscience. Rest In Peace Uncle Bob.

Bob was my big brother and best friend.
I have such wonderful memories of times with him as his children and ours grew up. We would often stay at mom and dad’s cottage and the rest of the family who lived in Belleville would join us there. What fun. So many laughs and irreverent teasing are all part of the memories which warm my heart.
Bob I miss you, but I’m thankful you are no longer locked in a frail body and your mind is once again free. Yours was a brilliant mind; your laughter infectious and your presence so big!
We were all proud of your accomplishments and proud, too, that your compassionate heart made you determined to do so much to help others.
It is hard to believe you are gone from this earth, but you will never be gone from our hearts. It is with sadness we say goodbye. But we are blessed to have known you and loved you.

for bob
when we heard that bob had passed away
we thought that robbie burns should play
a part in our condolences
with rhyming scottish cadences
that bob had held in some esteem
but searching through the ream on ream
of burns laments and elegies
did not yield one as fit to please
as thon burns song the whole world knows
and sings when an auld year sadly goes
so here for bob it's on the harp
making memories of him sharp

Dear Bob, he welcomed me into his homes that he shared with Valerie, on Hogarth Ave and at Lauderbach, with much grace – even though it must have been difficult for him to witness Valerie and my unrelenting chatter. At Hogarth, whenever I came to visit from Boston, he generously gave up his bedroom to me. I would open his closet to hang up my things and see his well-ironed shirts and his beautifully tailored jackets, neatly sorted, and smile to myself. At the bottom of his closet, there were always multiple rolls of colourful, shiny Christmas paper with which he would wrap the wonderful wildlife calendars that he gave to all the grandchildren – including mine – when we came to Toronto at Christmas time. When he opened my gifts to him – usually a book by one of his favorite authors, the Boston theologian James Carroll who wrote about reconciliation between Jews and Catholics – he would thank me profusely and immediately begin to read.
Until the days when he could read no longer. When I came to Canada two or three times a year, it was very sad for me to see him change from an intellectually alert, capable, sensitive and dashingly handsome man to his later emaciated state at Nesbitt Lodge. The last time I saw him briefly was this past December 2019, and I knew that there might not be a next time.
My condolences and great love go to my forever friend Valerie in this time of her grief. Valerie, you will rise again!
All my love, Sarah

Dear Bob,
We first met and got to know you in 1998 when you stayed with us in Dublin with Valerie and attended David’s 50th – twenty-two years ago.
Since then we have met up on and off in Toronto over Christmases and you kindly lent us your apartment and introduced us to the hard mattress from your futon – for which I’m forever grateful!
We also have some lovely memories of visits to Lauderbach enjoying the gorgeous weather, the sense of space, the Mennonite buggies, the walks, and the chats on the porch under the moon after a delicious meal. What a place of peace.
I have also often availed of Hogarth hospitality and the kindness of yourself and Valerie in making me feel part of the family. Your compassion towards animals was very endearing, with MacDuff becoming so relaxed in your presence.
It was sad to witness your suffering as you succumbed to ill health. It’s hard to imagine the frustration and isolation you must have experienced.
Memories are myriad but personality shines through and we are left with your legacy: your kind and generous soul, your large presence, your passion for social justice and change, your humour, curiosity and interest in people. Especially admirable was your spiritual journey where you questioned conditioning and conformity and chose the road less travelled to forge your own path accompanied along the way by your soul mate Valerie who loved and cared for you through the good and rough times.
David and I were planting a new garden when we got news of your passing and we both said RIP Bob and have dedicated two Australian ferns to your memory. They have strong sturdy trunks and delicate green ferns – a fitting tribute to you.
My last memory of you is having a picnic on the roof of your care home with Valerie and myself. It was a hot day and we were celebrating life. May we all meet again at a giant picnic.
Know that you were well loved by those around you. Lovely to have known you
Bob.
With love
Sarah and David
