Mercy Fernandes

Obituary of Mercy Teresa Fernandes

Mercy Teresa Fernandes, beloved wife of Alec Fernandes, and mother of Jude (Allison), Karen (Neil), and Lisel (Warren), passed away peacefully on Thursday, December 10.  Mercy was the sister of the late Joe, Johnson, and Yvette, and loving grandmother of Arden, Nicole, Janelle, Jonathan, Stefan, Tristan, Noah, Joybelle, and Aaron.

On September 25, Mercy celebrated her 90th birthday. Given that this significant milestone was reached in the midst of a global pandemic, she was nonetheless thrilled to have reached it. Mercy would have celebrated her 60th wedding anniversary in January 2021 — another milestone she was looking forward to.

Born in Mahim (Bombay), a member of St. Michael’s Parish in her youth, Mercy and spent most of her life in Bandra (Bombay). She will be remembered for her tireless work on behalf of St. Vincent de Paul in Bandra where she called on people in the community to raise funds and donations for the less fortunate. Much of her life, after her retirement from a more than 30-year working career at ICIM, was spent as a volunteer at Shanti Avedna Ashram, the cancer hospice in Bandra.

In recent years Mercy and Alec had moved to Mississauga, Ontario, Canada. Mercy’s devotion to family and community touched many lives.  She will be greatly missed.
