Obituary of Herman Banning
Herman Banning - Economist, Musician, Dutch Resistance Fighter.
At the family home in Lorne Park (Mississauga), in his 98th year, Herman Banning died peacefully on Sunday, January 31, 2016.
He was born in Bolsward, The Netherlands on October 27th, 1918. His studies at the Rotterdam School of Economics, disrupted by the Second World War, he joined the Dutch Resistance to fight the Nazi occupation.
Herman married the former Magdalena (Leny) Hordijk, and with their first two of five children, emigrated to Canada in 1953.
He joined the Ontario government, rising to the position of Director of Economics and advisor to Premiers Leslie Frost, John Robarts, and William Davis. After public service, Herman moved to Japan as principal of Britannica schools. And later, for ten years, he journeyed to more than 40 countries in Asia, Europe, Africa, and South America.
Herman is predeceased by his wife Magdalena, daughter Elizabeth and son Neil.
He is survived in Orlando, FL by son Everett, his wife Mari, grandson Simon, his wife Jennifer and great granddaughters Tristan and Taylor, grandson Christopher and his wife Michelle. In Plant City, FL, by his son-in-law Henri van Schaick, and in Delft, Netherlands, by grandchildren Justin, Menno and Samantha, and great granddaughter Sera.
He is also survived in Anniston, AL by his son Ian and grandsons Tosh, and the late Chance. He is also survived in Toronto by his son David and his wife Brenda, and grandchildren Brooke, Cole, Sam, Joseph and Anya.
Herman is resting at the eco Life Celebration Centre-Magnolia Chapel, 737 Dundas St. East, Mississauga, Ontario, located behind St. John the Baptist Anglican Church. Visitation Saturday, February 6th from 5 pm to 8 pm, with a Funeral Service in the Chapel Sunday, February 7th at 2 pm., with cremation to follow. Visiting will take place one hour prior to the service. A Memorial Reception will be held following the Funeral Service the Oak Room of which all are welcome to attend. Guests attending visiting and services are welcome to park in the lot adjacent to the church and proceed through the cemetery gates to the main building.
