Not a month goes by that I don’t think or mention an example, insight, or precedent of Richard Morris from my short time working for him both at the City of Toronto and with him at OPA (now IESO). Amid a Real Estate Construction Boom and through a Global Financial Crisis, Richard led our BBP Team to achieve remarkable triple bottom line successes with ambitious ground-breaking program and supported innovative City of Toronto climate-change policies; well before it started trending. These ran the sustainability gamut from Electrification, District Energy, Decarbonization, Green Real Estate, TGS, Tower Renewal, Community Energy Planning, Revolving Funds, Renewables, to even Zoo Poo Energy Efficiency.
Richard deftly managed up, always worked hard, and I learned a lot watching him build the BBP office into an entrepreneurial team that delivered the goods. He also knew how to socialize well and even hosted an occasional big industry party (e.g., Ontario Place Events) that made doing sustainable business, pleasurable.
Through radically different mandates, Richard was able to drive consensus and positive change in harmonious and fractious conditions. On a personal note, Richard was one of the very few Black Leaders in business, sustainability, or government with agency, authority, and dare I say, swagger.
My condolences to his family and loved ones on Richard’s passing. He was a great man, a good guy, and leaves a lasting impact on every new green building, decarbonized existing building, and clean electron flowing through Toronto.

I am saddened to hear about Richard’s passing. I had many interactions with Richard during the time when he was with the City of Toronto.
What I admired about him the most was the level of sincerity, integrity and passion he displayed on anything we discussed. He will be missed.

Richard was my first boss at the City of Toronto.
As a colleague he was highly intelligent, an innovative thinker and always made working fun. I learned so much from him.
As a friend he was kind, warm and loyal. I enjoyed listening to the stories he told me about his childhood, youth and professional life. Especially the deep love that he had for his family.
Richard was so passionate about his work in regards to climate change, global warming and green energy. He was determined to make the world a better place for future generations. In this respect I definitely feel he succeeded.
At the beginning of 2015 I was diagnosed with a major illness and remember how supportive he was throughout my journey to recovery. When I had to have surgery as part of my treatments, he called me the next day to see how I was doing. So typical of his thoughtful and caring nature.
To Mrs. Morris, Gerald, Nicole, Lauren, and the rest of his extended family, my deepest condolences for your profound loss. May happy memories of him bring you comfort during these difficult moments.
Rest in eternal peace my friend. I will miss you dearly, and you were truly phe-no-me-nal!

Dear Family,
Although I was unable to spend a lot of time with Richard, the times we were together were memorable and rich. He always made me feel welcomed and special. He was intuitively sensitive to my sister and I, and went out of his way to make us feel comfortable and held. I especially enjoyed our conversations about health and well being. I will never forget the wonderful time spent with his beautiful family and especially remember his adoration towards the children. He was a unique and caring human and my wish for the family is that they may be comforted by the knowledge of his life well lived. May his spirit soar.
