Obituary of Gloria Maria Anok

Gloria Maria Soares Anok March 30th, 1937 - October 14, 2024

Gloria Maria Soares Anok passed away suddenly but peacefully on October 14, 2024, at Bendale Acres Long Term Care Home in Scarborough, Ontario, due to breast cancer and Alzheimer’s. She was born in Hong Kong at St Paul’s Hospital on March 30th, 1937, to Joaquim (Jockey) Rocque Soares and Bertha Santos Soares. Preceded in death by her brother Gustavo Soares and her many cherished dogs Fluffy, Fritz, Rusky, and Mocha, she is survived by her loving husband Jose (Joe) Anok, her son James Anok, her son-in-law Daniel Brereton and their (her) beloved Sheepadoodle Chester.

Immigrating to Canada with her husband in 1966, she dove deep into the life of what she always believed was “the best country in the world,” and up until the last provincial election in 2022, she never missed making her mark on a voting ballot - her opinion mattered! Her career started at HSBC in Hong Kong, and in Canada, she worked in law firms and legal departments as an executive assistant for over 30 years, making many friends and challenging her bosses along the way.

“Auntie Gloria” to many, she was always interested in how the lives of her many godchildren and family friends were taking shape, encouraging and supporting them as she did her son to do what they loved and to lead, not follow. She was passionate about many things: family, reading, her garden, good coffee, parties, dogs, great conversation, fast cars, dancing, travel, nature, a good debate, and deep and meaningful relationships. Until her health conditions made it impossible, she was a Catholic Women’s League member, and her volunteerism spanned many organizations: Casa de Macau, St. Joseph’s Parish-Highland Creek, and Centenary Hospital.

She will be lovingly remembered and sorely missed.

Following her wishes, a Funeral Mass will be held on Saturday, November 9th at 11:00 am in St. Joseph’s Parish,  Highland Creek Scarborough, 200 Morrish Road, Scarborough. A reception in the church hall will be held after the service. The interment will be private.
