Looking back…
As a young boy growing up in Kingston, Jonas developed an appreciation for the outdoors. He spent every weekend outside exploring nature with his family. His summers were spent sailing, hiking, camping, canoeing and portaging, while snowy winters brought cross country or downhill skiing every weekend.
His adventures didn’t stop with the great outdoors. Trips to visit close relatives in Germany were almost a yearly thing, and Jonas loved Germany, especially the food and the beer. He returned often on his own as an adult. With family as a base in Germany, he developed a wanderlust to see more of Europe and spent his vacations exploring new places, relishing the atmosphere and discovering hidden gems.
After high school, Jonas chose to study sound editing at Loyalist College. With a diploma from Recording Arts Canada, he subsequently made a name for himself in the film and television industry as a Sound Editor, and received many accolades, awards and nominations, including a Gemini award for his work on Murdoch Mysteries. Overall, Jonas developed a reputation for his reserved but friendly and supportive demeanor; and his strong work ethic paved the way for a long and successful career.
Overall, Jonas led an active life. He was a relentless explorer with his nature hikes and extensive walks in the city. It was not uncommon for him to walk many kilometers in one day looking for ways to satisfy his need to discover unique places and interesting food. Yes, Jonas was a “Foodie”, often describing in detail the delicate differences amongst many dishes and restaurants he had been to. He was a walking encyclopedia when it came to food, spices, restaurants and beer; all this information neatly tucked away in his memory like a steel trap.
As a person, Jonas was very introspective, always striving to become a better person; and often engaging others in conversation while exploring the possibility of a greater purpose to life through its lessons. He was inherently kind, meticulous and detailed, generous, empathetic, thoughtful, practical and honourable; and although he was keenly aware of his life limiting illness, he maintained a grateful demeanor right up to the time of his passing. Yes, he was the gentle giant with much love to give, and he was loved in return.
“A blessing in disguise you are,
And now in your absence,
Your magic resides.
Verily, may you rest in light.”
