Obituary of Barry Herbert Dennis Davenport

Barry Davenport (Grandpa Bear) passed away on September 29, 2019 seemingly without pain of B cell lymphoma with his devoted partner Irene at his side.

Barry is survived by his two younger brothers Doug (Dianne) and Wayne (Lynda), daughter Jill (Paul), and son Brett.

When he was about 14 years old, while still attending school, Barry started working part-time as a delivery boy for a drug store to earn income to help support his widowed mother and small family with 3 boys.  He wanted to learn how to play the violin, but his mother was too poor to afford violin lessons.

All his life, Barry worked hard and played hard.  He tended to be a perfectionist in everything he tackled.  He was a very generous man and was always helping others without ever expecting anything in return.  For example, when he was mowing the lawn or clearing the snow off the driveway, he would do the same for our next-door neighbor without being asked - and all done to perfection.

Later in life, he enjoyed working at a golf course and did an excellent job as a grass cutter.  He made an effort to learn all about the different types of grass.  He was very pleased and proud of the new skills that he had developed in grass cutting.  Golfers, as well as the Greens staff, often commented on his beautifully-striped lawn on the fairway.

Barry loved the outdoors.  He loved nature.  He cared passionately about the environment and tried to protect the earth in whatever way he could.  He loved beautiful flowers and trees.  He planted roses, other flowers, and tended a vegetable garden for me.

Many years ago, he planted a birch tree in our small backyard.  Every autumn, the falling leaves would cover most of the backyard and Barry would be out there raking them up as I watched from the window.  This autumn, it broke my heart to watch the leaves falling off the tree, drifting by the window, flying all over the backyard, and Barry was not there to rake them up.  I miss him so much.
