Obituary of Richard Matthews

Richard Matthews passed away on April 1st, 2020 in Toronto after a year long battle with lymphoma. He is survived by his sons Christopher and Adrian, daughter-in-law Gayle, his grandchildren Cole, Camille, Chelsea and Leah, sister-in-law Marion and nieces Larina and Melanie.

 

He was born in Toronto, Ontario on January 8th, 1934 and taught for 34 years with the TDSB. He specialized teaching children with learning disabilities, unique at the time. Richard loved golf, baseball and bowling and coached many of his school’s teams to success. Upon his retirement in 1991, he filled his life volunteering for the Arthritis Society, organizing and directing lawn bowling tournaments, both outdoor and indoor, and belonged to a 5 pin bowling league. Despite his many activities he always made time to spend with his family. He married Janet North in Toronto on October 27th, 1961. They had a long and happy marriage and now Richard joins Janet who passed away February 22nd, 2001. Richard will be dearly missed by all who knew and loved him. The positive effect he had on so many people’s lives will always be remembered and celebrated.
