Obituary of Mervyn Fitzroy Shurland

Mervyn Fitzroy Shurland

February 04, 1930 - July 16, 2024

At 94 years of age, Mervyn passed away peacefully in his sleep on Tuesday, July 16, 2024, after a lengthy hospitalization resulting from a fall that occurred while he was running errands in the community.

Mervyn was born in San Fernando, Trinidad and Tobago on the 4th of February, 1930 to Ethelbert  and Ina Shurland. He was the second of 8 children. Mervyn completed post secondary studies there at Queen’s Royal College (QRC).

Mervyn migrated to England in 1956 to study law though wound up pursuing a passion for the theatre. Mervyn was a scholar of the fine arts and a lover of language and music who could recite many of the Shakespearean classics. He enjoyed composing his own poetry and songs.

Mervyn met Barbara Purcell in 1965 in Trinidad and they married in Toronto, Ontario, Canada on the 29th of March, 1969. The couple raised three beautiful children, Tshijere, Kwame and Thandi.

Mervyn made his living working in sales, while honing his craft as an aspiring writer. An avid reader, Mervyn worked tirelessly to develop a collection of personal writings that became some of his prized possessions.

Mervyn involved himself in the church, as a devout follower of Christ.

Mervyn was the beloved grandfather of five lovely grandchildren - Crystal, Dalen, Malaika, Ewan and Ellery.

His wise counsel as patriarch of the Shurland family will be sadly missed.  May he rest in eternal peace with his beloved wife Barbara.
